Five reasons why learning a language with LEAP is for you

The Language Experience for All Programme, also known as ‘LEAP’, is open to all University students who want to explore the world of languages.

You don’t have to be studying a language to enrol – it’s open to students of every ability. The programme allows you to pick one of 14 languages to study alongside your degree, including British Sign Language (BSL). Each course is tailored to different knowledge and skill levels.

So, is language learning for you? Here are five reasons why you should enrol on a course today:

  1. Resurrect your love of languages

If you have a GCSE in French or A-level in German from your days before Manchester, no matter how rusty, this is your chance to pick the language back up. If you haven’t used your skills for a while or are feeling a little nervous about speaking it again, you can join a class with others in the same boat to focus on using your skills in real-life situations.

Think of it this way – when you’re on your next holiday abroad, you can hold a conversation in your selected language and earn some serious bragging rights in front of your friends.

  1. Stand out in the job market

If you want to elevate your chances of getting your dream job, adding another language to your CV can immediately make you more employable. It shows you can connect with a wide range of people, and foster empathy and trust with them.

A second language is desirable in every career and sector, meaning that whatever your degree, you can complement your studies with a LEAP course.

Whether you’re studying aerospace engineering or history of art, it’s worth considering how a language can enhance your future career.

We also offer LEAP language for Healthcare (taught online), which is perfect if you’re a healthcare student and looking to enhance your communication skills in medical settings.

  1. Immerse yourself in culture

A language is a gateway to understanding other cultures, religions and communities. If you plan to study abroad, learning the language of that country is one of the first things you should do.

Language and culture are closely interlinked, allowing you to understand the cultural awareness, diversity and heritage of non-English-speaking countries. It’s a ticket to new experiences, a fool-proof way to make the most of your time abroad and take in the world around you.

  1. Learn in a way that suits you

Ditch the apps. Sometimes, the old ways are the best ways to learn – and it’s especially great when you can learn in the way that works for you.

LEAP offers face-to-face courses where you can get to know your classmates and your language expert. Thanks to small, in-person classes, you don’t have to struggle alone. Instead, you can learn with others to get the best out of your experience. Classes are flexible to study alongside your degree, with evening and daytime options available.

Every language taught in the programme is categorised by prior knowledge and ability, meaning you’ll always be matched to the right class. So don’t worry -if you’ve not studied a language since the early days of high school or want to try a new language altogether, many other beginners will be learning alongside you.

  1. Feed your brain

Learning a language can be challenging, but it can also be a healthy escape from your studies. Using your spare time to focus on something new can stimulate your mind and encourage personal growth.

Taking time away from your screen to immerse yourself in a new language means you meet new people, improve your confidence and exercise your brain. All in one go!

Learning a language is easier than ever, and there’s no better time to start than now.

LEAP courses are available with free choice credits, or you can pay a fee to enrol in them alongside your degree.

Applications open Monday, 9 June and close to all students at 5pm on Friday, 3 October. The LEAP website lists all language courses available, including timetables and the application process.
